We were surrounded by abundance, connected to nature and Country, peaceful, free and simply having fun together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLooking back now, that dream holds a much deeper meaning for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI see four young people surrounded by life, abundance and possibility. Connected to Country, connected to each other, and free to find our own paths.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eFour Cousins\u003c\/em\u003e holds my hope for our generation, that we can carry our stories while continuing to grow, find connection, experience joy and create lives that feel peaceful and full.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis artwork also holds an important place in my journey as an artist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI created \u003cem\u003eFour Cousins\u003c\/em\u003e when I was 21, at the beginning of what I imagined would become my first release of sculpted wall artworks. The following week, I created another slab that would later win the Emerging Artist section of the John Villiers Outback Art Prize in Winton.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLife took me in a very different direction before this collection could be released, but \u003cem\u003eFour Cousins\u003c\/em\u003e continued its own journey. I was becoming increasingly connected to the natural world around me, drawn to water, native flowers, animals and the landscapes that surrounded me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBecoming\u003c\/em\u003e was my way of sculpting that feeling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the centre of the artwork is a woman, with energy radiating outward from her. Surrounding her are some of my favourite native flowers and three rivers representing the waterways around my area. Footsteps move through Country, while Kangaroo meets the woman at her centre, grounding her.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the time, Kangaroo had begun appearing repeatedly throughout my artwork, although I didn't completely understand why.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen I originally shared this piece in 2023, I wrote:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Sometimes I don't know why I do things, but the answer will come to me when the time is right and I will understand then.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat sentiment remains an important part of \u003cem\u003eBecoming\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNot everything we create needs to be understood immediately. Sometimes creativity is instinctive, and the meaning of what we make reveals itself as we grow alongside it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSince its creation, \u003cem\u003eBecoming\u003c\/em\u003e has travelled and been exhibited in \u003cstrong\u003eWoodgate, Gladstone and Bundaberg\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow, for the first time, it is available to find its permanent home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBecoming\u003c\/em\u003e isn't about arriving at a final version of yourself. I trace the lines in its bark, follow the branches towards the sky and wonder what these old trees have witnessed over their lifetimes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese days, I share these walks with my little boy, Maverick. I love slowing down with him, pointing out the birds, trees and tiny details around us.
