Becoming | 2023

Becoming is an original hand-sculpted artwork created by Lili Jacobsen in 2023, during a time when I was fascinated by what it meant to be a young woman finding herself.

At 22, I described what I was experiencing as a feminine human awakening.

My senses felt awake. I was becoming increasingly connected to the natural world around me, drawn to water, native flowers, animals and the landscapes that surrounded me.

Becoming was my way of sculpting that feeling.

At the centre of the artwork is a woman, with energy radiating outward from her. Surrounding her are some of my favourite native flowers and three rivers representing the waterways around my area. Footsteps move through Country, while Kangaroo meets the woman at her centre, grounding her.

At the time, Kangaroo had begun appearing repeatedly throughout my artwork, although I didn't completely understand why.

When I originally shared this piece in 2023, I wrote:

“Sometimes I don't know why I do things, but the answer will come to me when the time is right and I will understand then.”

That sentiment remains an important part of Becoming.

Not everything we create needs to be understood immediately. Sometimes creativity is instinctive, and the meaning of what we make reveals itself as we grow alongside it.

Since its creation, Becoming has travelled and been exhibited in Woodgate, Gladstone and Bundaberg.

Now, for the first time, it is available to find its permanent home.

Becoming isn't about arriving at a final version of yourself. It's about being awake, curious and grounded, while allowing yourself the freedom to keep becoming.
